A quarter of the way to completion, the Palm Street Infant and Toddler Center hopes to open up at 1033 South Orange Avenue in the West Ward of Newark, New Jersey, in September. The building will be a 9,900 square foot, two-story center that serves 76 children from low-income families.

Unified Vailsburg Services (UVSO), a nonprofit human services and community development agency, is developing the new facility and will operate the early care program. The building will include four classrooms, a nurse’s room, a prep kitchen and program offices, plus a state-of-the-art playground adjacent to the building and adequate, safe drop-off and pick-up areas. Each classroom will have bathroom facilities. The infant and toddler program activities will be restricted to the building’s first floor, with the second floor developed as “build to suit” space for other UVSO programs or compatible tenants.

The Leviticus Fund is one of two nonprofit lenders supporting the $2.1 million construction. Leviticus has committed its financial resources to each of the three critical phases of the Palm Street project. In partnership with New Jersey Community Capital, another nonprofit lender, Leviticus provided $134,300 during the project’s predevelopment phase in 2012. Leviticus is beginning disbursements on a $550,000 loan during the construction phase of the project, and has approved$300,000 in permanent financing once the building is completed and receives its certificate of occupancy.

An added highlight for the project is UVSO’s partnership with the Newark Preschool Council to become a delegate agency for Early Head Start, and to open the first Early Head Start Center in Vailsburg at the new Palm Street center.

“Leviticus is proud to support UVSO’s work to develop yet another high-quality early care and education center to serve economically poor families,” explained Greg Maher, Leviticus’ Executive Director. “UVSO has a proven track record and fills a critical need in such a vital and dynamic community like Vailsburg.”
